I work in a school and whenever we need to do anything special with students in a room that we do not normally use, we need to do a fire risk assessment to ensure that the environment is safe for everybody concerned. The fire risk assessment takes all sorts of things into account and obviously needs to be put in place where such a large number of people are potentially at risk. Obviously, as teachers we are not qualified to do a fire risk assessment ourselves but we need to bring in an outside company to ensure that we adhere to the regulations. One situation recently occurred when a new building was built at the school over the summer holidays to accommodate some extra students. The room had to be assessed before it could be used and, because it had been left until the last minute, we had to make other arrangements for these students until the matter had been sorted. Now, however, the room has passed all the regulations and is in use on a regular basis but it does go to show how much an institution like a school has to consider on a daily basis. Although I teach in a school, I would not like to be ultimately responsible for the running of the place on a day to day basis.
